ANIMALS ON THE TRAIL

In 1801, President Jefferson bought the Louisiana territory. He asked his private secretary to lead a crew of men to the Pacific Ocean. They had to travel 2,000 miles each way knowing nothing about the land. There were many different types of animals on the trail, some lived on the prairie. One of the new discoveries was the buffalo, they were strong and heavy animals. Another was the Prairie Dog; they shot one and sent it back to the United States to study. One of the other animals on the plain was a Pronghorn; a type of antelope, it was fast, swift and had a different type of horns. In the mountains, the animals were a lot stronger and vicious than the plains animals. One of them was the Grizzly; they only managed to kill one of them but wounded many in their attempt to protect themselves and get food. The other was the wolf, which hunted in groups and very often killed their prey. But one of the discovered mountain animals which are not so vicious is the Lewis Woodpecker.Lewis and Clark also searched the water for new fish. They found seven different types of salmon; it was one of their main foods. They also found trout. Lewis made an error in his journal saying that he saw the sea otter leave the ocean for fresh water and it was actually a harbor seal. They also found two different sizes of swans.

Over this whole entire trip they found 11 mammals, 11 birds, and two fish unknown to science. If it were not for these people we would be a smaller country and not know as much about wildlife.

I hope you enjoyed my presentation and learned a lot.
