NASA TELLIE
By: Annie K., Kelly E. and Rene A.

On December 20, 2000 my fellow Mars Mission specialists and I went to Parkway South High School to have a teleconference with NASA scientists. We talked with NASA specialists: Dr. Thomas Dreschel, Director of Science Education, Life Sciences Support Contract and Fundamental Biology Outreach Program (Dynamac Corporation, Kennedy Space Center); Dr. Andrew Schuerger, Research Scientist, Plant Pathologist (Dynamac Corporation, Kennedy Space Center); Dr. Bill Knott, Chief Scientist, Biological Programs (NASA, Kennedy Space Center); Dr. Ray Wheeler, Research Scientist, Plant Physiologist (NASA, Kennedy Space Center); Mrs. Barbara Peterson, Research Organic Chemist (Dynamac Corporation, Kennedy Space Center).
Dr. Dreschel's web site is being re-done currently. This website will take you to his area of expertise.

We all sat at tables and talked to them on the TV. For the first 5 minutes we talked and they answered our questions. Then we watched a video about the scientists' research. All of the sudden, the picture went blank. They could see us, but we couldn't see them. At the end of the conference, NASA was able to fix the picture for us. NASA felt bad about us not getting to see the scientists the whole time. They were so nice that they let us redo the teleconference again on January 8, 2001. We all thank them so much for speaking with us!
Thanks,
Kelly E.
The NASA teleconference was a great experience. We really enjoyed it. We got to meet famous NASA people without an expensive trip. Our thank you is HUGE and will never fit on paper. The best part about the teleconference was that we got to see the people that we were talking to. We could have just called them and we would have gotten the same information, but my teachers, Mrs.Rothermich and Mrs. Murray, went the extra mile and we had a teleconference.
It was new and different and we enjoyed it. These famous people took a little while out of their busy day to talk to us. This teleconference was at Parkway South High. We learned a lot about Mars like robots are already on Mars preparing for us. We also learned what a teleconference is and how to talk to scientists.

Here we are writing our questions with Mrs. Wadsack for our NASA teleconference!!
These are questions that we asked Dr. Dreschel and the other guest Scientists.
Our video has the entire Teleconference with outstanding information:
How can you pick the best leader when we land on Mars?
How would 100 people travel to Mars?
What kind of oil or fuel has been used to send rockets into space?
Will you charge and/or computerize machines to go the Mars, then get ready for the people who come later?
If so, why and how?
How can we recycle water on the journey and on Mars?
When we get there should we start like the beginning of the earth with one-celled organisms to make oxygen?
What if someone gets hurt or dies?
What happens if the ice caps melt before we get there in 2030?
Should we plant plants before we melt the ice caps?
What would happen if Mars blows up?
What would we use to get back to earth if there was an emergency?
What would we do about pollution on Mars?
What would happen if we made a greenhouse?
Would we be able to breath in it after maybe ten days or so?
What would happen if you were on Mars and a volcano exploded?
What would we do with dead people on Mars or anyone who might die on the trip back to Earth?
Would you send men or women or both together?
Who do we pick to go to have a successful first mission to Mars?
What is one way that we could bring water to Mars?
What equipment would an astronaut need to go up to Mars?
What would happen if we found life on Mars?
